CapEQ Partners with Ecologi to Support Peatland Conservation in Indonesia
We're excited to announce a new collaboration between CapEQ and Ecologi, a green impact consultancy, to back the Katingan Mentaya Restoration and Conservation Project in Indonesia - an ongoing initiative to restore and protect the world’s vital peatland ecosystems while supporting local communities and fighting climate change.
Key highlights from the project:
🔹 Critical Carbon Storage: Peatlands store more carbon than all other vegetation types combined, and Indonesia contains 36% of the world’s tropical peatlands. Protecting these ecosystems is essential to mitigating climate change.
🔹 Satellite & Fire Management: The project employs cutting-edge satellite monitoring, drones, and over 500 trained firefighters to protect peatlands from illegal activity and devastating fires during dry seasons.
🔹 Restoration Efforts: The team is working to rehydrate degraded peatlands through innovative techniques like canal-blocking and building deep wells, crucial for restoring carbon storage and biodiversity.
🔹 Biodiversity & Wildlife Protection: The project safeguards habitats for 44 critically endangered species, including the Bornean orangutan, ensuring their survival while preserving vital ecosystems.
🔹 Empowering Local Communities: With over 49,000 people benefiting, the project promotes sustainable livelihoods through microfinance for women entrepreneurs, youth training, and health education, creating a model for community-driven conservation.
🔹 Verified Climate Impact: The Katingan Mentaya Project prevents emissions equivalent to 7.5 million carbon credits annually, verified by top global standards, making a measurable impact on global climate goals.
